 Hayward's Stonebrae CC lands Nationwide
tourney Except from an article
By Curtis
Pashelka
May 3, 2008 - The
PGA Tour is moving its Bay Area Nationwide Tour event
from Livermore to Hayward after it agreed to manage the
Stonebrae Country Club, which now will be named TPC San
Francisco Bay at Stonebrae. The tournament will be
held March 30 to April 5, 2009, the week before the
Masters.
The 7,200-yard Hayward course, designed by David
McLay Kidd, will host the Nationwide Tour's Stonebrae
Classic from March 30 to April 5 next year, taking over
the spring dates held by the 3-year-old Livermore Valley
Wine Country Championship at The Course at Wente
Vineyards.
The Stonebrae Classic joins The Presidents Cup,
scheduled for Oct. 5-11, 2009, at Harding Park in San
Francisco, and the Champions Tour's Charles Schwab Cup
Championship at Sonoma Golf Club Oct. 30 to Nov. 2 as
the major PGA Tour events in the area. The Schwab Cup
will be played at Harding in 2010 and 2011.
There are now 29 TPC courses, 15 of which host either
PGA, Nationwide or Champions tour events.
"We are excited to plant the PGA Tour flag at this
prestigious David McLay Kidd design, which will become
the new flagship private club on the West Coast for the
TPC Network," said David Pillsbury, president of PGA
Tour Golf Course Properties, in a statement.
Wente Vineyards, which hosted the Wine Country
Championship since 2006, was rated the Nationwide Tour's
toughest course the last two years. The cumulative
stroke average for last year's tournament was 75.235,
making it the ninth-most difficult course in the tour's
18-year history.
Tour officials estimated that the event drew an
average of 15,000 fans each year. All four rounds of the
Stonebrae Classic will be televised on the Golf Channel.
This year's Wine Country Championship was not
televised.

Hayward contemplates
its traffic nightmare
07/20/2007 - HAYWARD — In 1957, the California
Department of Transportation began conducting serious
talks with Hayward leaders about plans for a new East
Bay freeway.
But Caltrans' 1950s-era
solution — a crisscrossing of concrete freeways laid out
over a fast-developing central East Bay landscape — was
loathsome to many who would have been in its path.
And so a battle began.
The passing years didn't
bring much resolution. Money shortages, bureaucratic
delays and the burgeoning environmental movement helped
contribute to the Foothill Freeway's eventual demise. A
lawsuit killed it for good.
Today, many say they are
struggling with Hayward's traffic problems, but are more
worried that proposed solutions will make things
worse.

REGIONAL:
EARTHQUAKE A REMINDER TO EAST BAY
RESIDENTS
07/20/07 - A magnitude 4.2 earthquake that
rolled through the East Bay this morning was a reminder
to Bay Area residents to be prepared for another massive
quake.
"There is no doubt in my
mind there will be a damaging earthquake on the Hayward
Fault during my lifetime,'' Stanford geophysicist Paul
Segall said. "This little earthquake won't make the
situation better. People shouldn't feel any relief.''
One of the Bay Area's
largest earthquakes hit the Hayward Fault Oct. 1, 1868,
destroying many buildings in Hayward and San Francisco.
That earthquake was called the "Great San Francisco
Earthquake'' until the 7.9 quake of 1906, Segall
said.
Segall said the frequency
of large earthquakes on the Hayward Fault ranges from
every 150 years to 200 years between tremblers. Next
year will be the 140th anniversary of the Hayward quake.
Segall suggests Bay Area
residents visit: http://quake.abag.ca.gov/ where there are numerous
resources available to check the stability of specific
neighborhoods.

Preparedness page.
