Georgian — Befitting a king—in fact, the style is named
for four King Georges of England—Georgian homes are
refined and symmetrical with paired chimneys and a
decorative crown over the front door. Modeled after the
more elaborate homes of England, the Georgian style
dominated the British colonies in the 1700s. Most
surviving Georgians sport side-gabled roofs, are two to
three stories high, and are constructed in brick.
Georgian homes almost always feature an orderly row of
five windows across the second story. Modern-day
builders often combine features of the refined Georgian
style with decorative flourishes from the more
formal Federal style.

Derby House
- Built by Captain Richard Derby in 1762 as a
wedding gift for his son, Elias Hasket Derby, this fine
example of Georgian architecture was the home of Salem's
most prominent and successful merchant for twenty years.
Timber was much cheaper than brick in New England in the
1760s, and therefore brick was not as common in New
England as in the Mid-Atlantic and Southern colonies.
The use of brick for this house, along with its large
windows and fashionable Georgian design, show the wealth
of the Derby family.

Dey
Mansion in Wayne, New Jersey

Dey Mansion was
constructed between 1740-1750 by Dirck Dey, a Dutch-born
planter. The mansion was probably completed by his son,
Theunis Dey. Dey Mansion is a fabulous example of
Georgian architecture displaying both Dutch and English
influences. Few mid-18th century homes west of the
Hudson River compare to the mansion's elegance. During
the American War for Independance, Theunis Dey commanded
the Bergen County Militia. General Washington used the
eastern half of the mansion as his headquarters in July,
October and November of 1780.
